CONSTRUCTING BETTER LIVELIHOODS

A start-up in Khayelitsha has a novel solution for the world’s housing challenges – and it has already built 34 flats on six properties in the township with many more to come.

This building start-up builds ‘backyard’ rooms that are then rented out by the landlord from which that landlord then derives a second income stream. This helps solve two challenges at once – the need for plentiful, affordable, well-built accommodation and additional income for property owners who lack easy access to capital through traditional channels.

Headed up by entrepreneur Carl Fredrik Sammeli, this team of 12 are constructing better livelihoods and plan to scale up to other areas of the country and the world in due course.
