A closer look at our 2023 candidates

As things kick into gear with the 2023 City Press and Absa Money Makeover Challenge, Maya is joined by Sarah Nkwana from Absa who was part of the team who paired the candidates with their Absa advisers.

Watch as they deep dive and unpack the reasoning behind the candidate selection and the financial journeys and stories that will unfold this season.

It’s no easy task to choose just six candidates from a pool of incredible entries, but Maya and Sarah are confident in the six candidates representing the Money Makeover Journey this season.

With stories like that of Zihle, a young medical professional in her mid-20s, who found herself financially responsible for her siblings after losing her mother in 2020 and Mlibokazi who similarly has found herself under financial pressure to help her family achieve her goals – we’ll get a real and close look at financial debt taken on by young professionals faced with family responsibility.

And journeys like Molefi who is in his early 30s and financially sorted with no debt who is looking to be financially independent at 45 to start his own business and Raymond and Sello looking to kickstart their business ventures – we’ll get to see the financial journey of budding entrepreneurs from three different perspectives. Molefi with his financial stability and long-term entrepreneurial journey, Sello who’s been building his business as a side hustle while employed, and Raymond who has never yet been employed looking to expand his start-up restaurant.

Johan is a unique journey amid his fellow contestants, as his journey begins with entering a debt review process through Absa – a first for the Money Makeover series. As he and his wife near retirement within the next five to six years, they are looking at settling their debts and getting their finances in order, but to do that an evaluation and review of his debt is needed – which is where his Absa financial adviser Takalani will be guiding him through the process.

If you really want to get your finances in order, you have to start tracking your spending. If you cannot commit to that, it is unlikely you will be able to reach your goals.

City Press will follow the candidates’ progress on the first and third week of each month, as well as online on the Money Makeover page:
