Balancing our money is a delicate dance between financial stability and debt. Now, as they reach a month in, we're checking in to find out how things are ticking along for our contestants.
Kicking things off, Maya takes us through the moments that made our candidates go 'a-ha', and how they are feeling about their journeys thus far...
Tune in below to see what the contestants are saying has been their A-HA moment so far:
Molefi
"I have learnt about the few fundamental needs that form my spending baseline. These are basically my shelter, my utilities, my groceries, transportation, savings, and investing," shares Molefi.
Mlibokazi
"My biggest learning has been that the little expenses pile up and become a big expense. Like, in my instance, there's a lot of use of Uber as transport, and that has piled up and become a very big expense," explains Mlibokazi
Zipho-zihle
"It's important to create a budget and spending plan prior to receiving your money. This will not only help to inform where your money should go, but it will help you prioritise where your money should go and it will help you identify key areas where you could save money," reflects Zihle.
Johan
"I'm making plans for an emergency fund," shares Johan, "All my non-essential debit orders were cancelled - saving a huge amount of money."
Sello
"Writing down a budget is a simple task, but it can teach you a very important money skill. When you write down, you are able to see the names of the things you spend money on," Sello says, "It helps you to reflect and it teaches you a good money skill," explains Sello.
Raymond
"I've learnt that I need to separate my expenses - farming expenses, restaurant expenses, and also personal expenses, because I've never done that before. I've been doing it all together, but now I can see and keep track of my spendings - the money coming in and the money going out," says Raymond.

If you really want to get your finances in order, you have to start tracking your spending. If you cannot commit to that, it is unlikely you will be able to reach your goals.
