Epworth:
Upholding faith, compassion and courage
Epworth boasts a long and proud tradition — 124 years — of providing a holistic education to boys and girls from Grades RRR to 7 in our preparatory school and to girls (boarders and day scholars) from Grades 8 to 12 in our high school.
We believe strongly in co-education for younger pupils and passionately about the benefits, particularly to girls, of single-sex education in high school. Our school, and all its activities, is firmly guided by our motto of Fida (Faith) Humana (Compassion) Fortis (Courage), and our moral compass is set by the spiritual qualities embedded in our Christian faith. Authenticity is central to all our pursuits, and we strive to promote an ethos of “true to who we are”.
We encourage our pupils to aim at personal excellence, focusing on realising their individual potential.
In our preparatory school, we aim to create a nurturing atmosphere that encourages learning through positive affirmation.
In the elementary grades, pupils learn through play and self-discovery while in the higher grades, we promote critical thinking, creativity and problem solving.
Our high school is a leader in innovative teaching methodologies and our academic programme comprises an extensive range of subjects accommodating pupils with wide-ranging abilities and interests. We follow the Independent Examination Board (IEB) syllabus and consistently achieve 100% pass rate in the IEB Senior Certificate Examinations.
In both the Prep and the High schools, sport and performing arts activities feature prominently, enhancing our holistic offering and teaching valuable life skills.

Gateway Christian School:
Striving for excellence
Gateway Christian School is centrally situated to serve the educational needs of our community and surrounds.
The foundation of formal education begins at Gateway Christian School and gives learners an excellent grounding and preparation for high school, FET and beyond. Gateway follows the CAPS curriculum from grades R to 7. We have just upgraded our computer centre via a generous donation and hence our learners from grades 3 to 7 will be receiving computer studies in this new facility. Gateway achieves excellent academic results annually and our learners from grade 7 go on to the various local high schools where they have performed exceptionally well in the National Senior Certificate and/or IEB examinations over many years.
We celebrate enthusiastically the wonderful achievements that our learners earn, both academically in the classrooms and extramurally. We are constantly encouraging our learners to achieve outstanding results through our school motto: “Striving for academic and spiritual excellence.”
Cowan House:
Unlocking potential
through life-long learning
Set in a spacious 33-acre property, Cowan House is an independent, co-educational preparatory school for both day scholars (Grade RRR to Grade 7) and boarders (Grade 2 to Grade 7).
Our educational philosophy fosters curiosity and self-belief in unlocking each child’s unique potential.
At Cowan House, our boys and girls encounter a rich array of opportunities for personal development during their journey of learning and growth in understanding themselves.
Co-educational schooling is valuable in developing vital life skills as shared learning environments give boys and girls, brothers and sisters, opportunities to balance emotional intelligence with competitive risk taking, and problem solving with creativity. Girls and boys are able to interact, share perspectives, function as equals, and be schooled together as a family.
With a solid foundation of academic excellence, sport and culture, as well as an understanding of the importance of the environment, Cowan House lays the foundation for our children to become their best.
Visit us for an open day on March 21 from 9 am.

Sparking intelligence
and building character
The educational ethos at Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School is probably closest to that of Martin Luther King Jnr who said: “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character — that is the goal of true education.”
That is our goal. What is offered and taught in the classroom, on the sports field, through music and cultural interaction, through reading and books, through success and failure, is what will spark intelligence and wisdom and will build true character. When girls leave us at the end of their matric year with a questioning mind and confidence in their ability, the influence they can have on those with whom they will work or study should be tremendous. Our wish is that parents allow their daughters to learn about life through their own experiences, just as they did. There is an increasing tendency for parents to do everything for their daughters. We, the parent and the teacher, must remember that building character is as important as fostering the development of intelligence.
This is the 102nd year since GHS was founded; this great school has represented excellence in education for girls since 1920. Our mission continues to be the pursuit of excellence, and every day we challenge each girl to be the best that she can possibly be.
Our vision is to empower our pupils to be productive global citizens who can serve others and have a positive influence on the future.
Our mission:
Promote human dignity and equal opportunity.
Promote maximum freedom of the individual within the context of maximum good for all.
Foster excellence according to the talents and interests of each person.
Instil a sound set of values, including a respect for, and service to, the community and the environment
Promote “Cheerfulness with Industry” in the 21st century.

St John’s D.S.G.
Caring for each and every pupil
“Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:29-31
As a record number of enthusiastic Grade 8 girls joined us at the start of this year and settled quickly into their new senior school routine, we celebrated yet another set of outstanding matric results.
St John’s D.S.G. remains known and loved as a school in which girls are well known and individual potential is nurtured. Our academic, sporting and cultural performances speak for themselves but it is the attentive care for and understanding of the needs of every girl which we believe differentiates our school. Our empathetic, caring ethos, our skilled teachers and outstanding facilities allow girls to flourish in a challenging world in which they are encouraged to explore, question and discover truth. We strive to inspire girls to embrace diversity through meaningful conversations; to respect and care for each other and their environment; and to understand consequences without fear of failure, encouraged by our caring, dedicated staff.
Our commitment is to continue to send out intelligent, articulate, graceful and significant young women prepared to flourish in the world with a sound faith foundation, where they can soar like eagles.

Wembley College:
Caring for each and every pupil
Wembley College is the only independent, co-educational Cambridge boarding school in the KZN Midlands offering a wide range of subjects. Our school caters for families; brothers and sisters can board together from middle school to matric in a tranquil, country setting.
A Cambridge education prepares students for life, helping them develop an informed curiosity and a lasting passion for learning. Schools can shape a Cambridge curriculum around how they want their students to learn, helping them discover new abilities and a wider world. Cambridge students develop the skills they need to achieve at school, university and work. Cambridge students are widely accepted in top study destinations worldwide. They are recognised as qualifications that equip students with the skills they need to succeed at university and beyond. Universities tell us that they value the independent research and critical thinking skills, as well as the deep subject knowledge that our qualifications bring. Cambridge works with these universities when they revise their qualifications every two years, getting expert advice to make sure they’re preparing students to succeed at university and beyond. There are over 10 000 Cambridge schools in 160 countries across the world.
Some of our teachers in the Wembley high school tell us why they feel the Cambridge system is the right choice. Mr Dewald Wolmarans, our IT teacher in the high school, said about the Cambridge system: “We are creating innovative, creative thinkers who learn to find solutions.”
Mr Chris Taljaard, our high school English teacher, believes Cambridge is an excellent system because it allows teachers to customise their learning plans to suit the needs of the students.
Mrs Tamara Sneyd, the biology teacher, loves the Cambridge syllabus because it encourages independent thought. It helps students learn through active application in the classroom.
Wembley College is proud of its scholars who were listed in the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards for their 2021 exam results.
After producing fantastic 2021 results, several Wembley scholars featured in the Top in the World and Top in SA Achievement categories for their June and November exams. Wembley College executive head Lizet van der Walt said: “These awards are an acknowledgement of our students’ commitment and dedication to excellence and show their ability and motivation to achieve.”
